Use the Custom Properties tab in Virtual Machine Properties to assign up to 10 custom fields to a virtual machine. Use custom fields to identify, track, and sort virtual machines by any property including department, geographic area, or function.

The following procedures describe how to add custom properties to a virtual machine and provide two methods for adding the custom properties to virtual machine displays.

To add custom properties to a virtual machine
  1. In Virtual Machines view (for a deployed virtual machine) or Library view (for a stored virtual machine), in the results pane, double-click the virtual machine to open the Virtual Machine Properties dialog box.

  2. Click the Custom Properties tab.

  3. Enter values in any of the 10 numbered custom property fields.

To display custom properties for virtual machines
  1. In Virtual Machines view or Library view, display virtual machines in the results pane.

  2. To add a custom property column to the table, right-click anywhere in the column headers, and then click the custom property.

  3. To group virtual machines by the custom property, select the property in the Group by box.

To display custom properties for virtual machines by using Select Columns
  1. In Virtual Machines view or Library view, display virtual machines in the results pane.

  2. On the toolbar, click Select Columns.

  3. In the Select Columns dialog box, select the check box for each custom property that you want to add to the results display.

  4. To group virtual machines by the custom property, select the property in the Group by box.
