When you are adding hosts on a trusted domain by using the Add Hosts Wizard, you can use the wizard to search the domain for computers and then decide which computers you want to add as hosts.

This search returns only computers on which supported versions of Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008, are installed. For more information about supported operating systems, see Supported Operating Systems for VMM Components (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=110906).

Note
If you have a disjointed namespace environment, the search function will not work because it is designed to be used only with an Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) domain.
To search for hosts on a trusted domain
  1. In any view in the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) Administrator Console, in the Actions pane, click Add hosts to open the Add Hosts Wizard.

  2. On the Select Host Location page, enter credentials for an account with administrative rights on the domain of the hosts you want to search for, and then click Next.

  3. On the Select Host Servers page, in the Domain box, type the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the domain you want to search or leave the default value, and then click Search. The default value is the domain of the computer on which you are running the VMM Administrator Console or the domain you entered on the Select Host Location page.

  4. In the Computer Search dialog box, do the following:

    1. In the Domain box, type the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the trusted domain you want to search or use the default value.

    2. In the Computer name box, type a complete computer name to search for a specific computer, or type the first few characters of a computer name to return all computers whose name begins with that set of characters. For example, if you type TEST and then click Search, all computers with names beginning with the text string TEST are returned.

      Note
The name of the host should be the NetBIOS name, not the IP address or the fully qualified domain name (FQDN). To add a host in a different domain, change the value in the Domain box and then enter the NetBIOS name.
    3. To limit a search to hosts that have specific virtualization software installed, under Limit the results to computers which are already configured with, select either the Virtual Server check box or the Hyper-V check box.

    4. In the Search results list, select the computers you want to add as hosts to VMM and then click Add.

    5. After you have selected all the computers you want to add as hosts, click OK.
