The following procedures describe how to use the System Center Mobile Device Manager (MDM) Group Policy (GP) extensions to configure a wide area network (WAN) connection to the Internet or to the company network.

Note:
Do not send a GPRS setting to a CDMA device or connectivity on the device will be broken. You can apply Group Policies exclusively to non-CDMA devices by linking the Group Policy object (GPO) to an appropriate organizational unit (OU), or by using security groups or WMI filtering to specify the target devices.

Configuring a WAN Internet Connection

The following procedure assumes that you are required to provide a user name and password. If you are not required to provide a user name and password, make sure that you clear the This connection requires a user name and a passwordcheck box.

To configure a WAN Internet connection

  1. In the Group Policy Management Console, expand Group Policy Objectsand then locate the target GPO.

  2. Right-click the GPO and then select Edit.

  3. In the Group Policy Object Editor, expand Windows Mobile Settings.

  4. Right-click Network Connectionsand then select New Network Connection.

  5. In the Welcome to the Network Connection Wizarddialog box, choose Next.

  6. In the Connection Typedialog box, choose WAN(GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA), and then choose Next.

  7. In the WAN Connection Settingsdialog box, in the Connection Namebox, type the connection name, and then in the Access Point Name (APN)box, type the access point name.

  8. In the Wireless Network Typelist, select GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA.

  9. In the Connects Tolist, select Internet.

  10. Select This connection requires a username and password.

  11. If you want to prevent the user from changing these settings, select Do not allow the user to change the connection settings.

  12. Choose Next.

  13. In the Wireless WAN Connection Settingsdialog box, type the User name, and then type the Password.

  14. In the Authentication Typelist, select the authentication type, and then choose Next.

  15. In the Completing the Network Connection Wizarddialog box, review the summary information to verify that it is correct. You can go back to change information, if it is necessary.

  16. Choose Finish.

Configuring a WAN Work Connection

The following procedure assumes that you connect to the network through a proxy server and that you are required to provide a user name and password.

If you are not required to connect through a proxy server, make sure that you clear the Configure how this work connection allows access to the Internetcheckbox.

If you are not required to provide a user name and password, make sure that you clear the This connection requires a user name and a passwordcheck box.

If you are not required to connect to a proxy server, or to provide a username and password, make sure that you clear both check boxes.

To configure a WAN work connection

  1. In the Group Policy Management Console, expand Group Policy Objectsand then locate the target GPO.

  2. Right-click the GPO and then select Edit.

  3. In the Group Policy Object Editor, expand Windows Mobile Settings.

  4. Right-click Network Connectionsand then select New Network Connection.

  5. In the Welcome to the Network Connection Wizarddialog box, choose Next.

  6. In the Connection Typedialog box, choose WAN(GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA), and then choose Next.

  7. In the WAN Connection Settingsdialog box, in the Connection Namebox, type the connection name, and then in the Access Point Name (APN)box, type the access point name.

  8. In the Wireless Network Typelist, select GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA.

  9. In the Connects Tolist, select Work.

  10. Select Configure how this work connection allows access to the Internet.

  11. Select This connection requires a username and password.

  12. If you want to prevent the user from changing these settings, select Do not allow the user to change the connection settings.

  13. Choose Next.

  14. In the Wireless WAN Connection Settingsdialog box, type the User nameand then type the Password.

  15. In the Authentication Typelist, select the authentication type and then choose Next.

    To select a proxy server, use one of the following methods:

  16. In the Proxy Configurationdialog box, select a proxy server in the Existing proxieslist. Or, if your proxy server is not listed, follow these steps:

    1. Choose Add.

    2. In the Configure New Proxydialog box, type the description of the proxy connection in the Descriptionbox, and then type the proxy server address and port number in the Proxy (Host:Port)box.

    3. In the Proxy Typelist, select the type of proxy.

    4. In the Proxy Address Typelist, select the proxy address type and then choose OK.

    5. If you want to prevent the user from changing these settings, select Do not allow the user to change the proxy settings.

  17. Choose Next.

  18. In the Completing the Network Connection Wizarddialog box, review the summary information to verify that it is correct. You can go back to change information, if it is necessary.

  19. Choose Finish.
