The first phase of deploying System Center Essentials 2007 in your environment is to install the server components on your designated management server.

Note
Essentials 2007 is designed to be easily installed and configured, allowing users to start managing objects quickly. After you install Essentials 2007 and configure security (if you do not have Active Directory Domain Administrator privileges), use the Getting Started screen to guide you through the deployment of objects and the configuration of update management.

After installation is complete, you can open the console by clicking Start, pointing to Programs and System Center Essentials 2007, and then clicking System Center Essentials 2007 Console.

To install System Center Essentials

  1. Designate a server as the management server. The designated server must meet all software and hardware requirements. For detailed information about these requirements, see System Requirements and Supported Platforms for System Center Essentials.

  2. Insert the product CD into the CD drive.

  3. Run SetupSCE.exe from the root of the CD.

  4. Click Read Release Notes to read important information that might be needed during deployment.

  5. On the Start page, click Full Setup to start the System Center Essentials Setup Wizard.

  6. Enter the requested information, and then complete the wizard.

Note
If you install the Essentials 2007 database on an instance of SQL Server 2005 that is set to require case-sensitive credentials, setup will not complete successfully if you enter the Action Account credentials using incorrect case.

To install Essentials 2007 SP1 on Windows Server 2008

  1. In Server Manager on the Windows Server 2008-based server, in Server Manager, install Microsoft .NET 3.0.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Install Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 in Server Manager. When configuring IIS 7.0, select the Web Server check box to enable Web Server Role services. Then, under Application Development ensure that Active Server Pages (ASP) and ASP .NET are selected.

    • Use the following command line to install and configure IIS 7.0:

      call start /w %SYSTEMDRIVE%\windows\system32\pkgmgr /l:log.etw /iu:IIS-WebServerRole;IIS-WebServer;IIS-CommonHttpFeatures;IIS-StaticContent;IIS-DefaultDocument;IIS-DirectoryBrowsing;IIS-HttpErrors;IIS-HttpRedirect;IIS-ApplicationDevelopment;IIS-ASPNET;IIS-NetFxExtensibility;IIS-ASP;IIS-CGI;IIS-ISAPIExtensions;IIS-ISAPIFilter;IIS-ServerSideIncludes;IIS-HealthAndDiagnostics;IIS-HttpLogging;IIS-LoggingLibraries;IIS-RequestMonitor;IIS-HttpTracing;IIS-CustomLogging;IIS-ODBCLogging;IIS-Security;IIS-BasicAuthentication;IIS-WindowsAuthentication;IIS-DigestAuthentication;IIS-ClientCertificateMappingAuthentication;IIS-IISCertificateMappingAuthentication;IIS-URLAuthorization;IIS-RequestFiltering;IIS-IPSecurity;IIS-Performance;IIS-HttpCompressionStatic;IIS-HttpCompressionDynamic;IIS-WebServerManagementTools;IIS-ManagementConsole;IIS-ManagementScriptingTools;IIS-ManagementService;IIS-IIS6ManagementCompatibility;IIS-Metabase;IIS-WMICompatibility;IIS-LegacyScripts;IIS-LegacySnapIn;IIS-FTPPublishingService;IIS-FTPServer;IIS-FTPManagement;WAS-WindowsActivationService;WAS-ProcessModel;WAS-NetFxEnvironment;WAS-ConfigurationAPI
