Usage profiles relay to the Model Wizard the kinds of tasks performed in SharePoint. The Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) application model includes information for a default set of usage profiles. You can view or modify the default usage profiles using the Customize Usage Profiles Action Dialog.

Default Usage Profiles

Capacity Planner uses server usage profiles for information about tasks performed by servers; it also uses client usage profiles for information about tasks performed by users. You can use the default usage profiles as templates to create custom usage profiles (described later in this topic).

In the Customize Usage Profiles Action Dialog, select or clear the Server templates or Client templates check boxes to limit the list of usage profiles to a specific type. To view a usage profile, select it in the Select Usage Profile list.

Default Server Usage Profiles

The WSS application model provides one default server usage profile, named Server Background Loads.

Default Client Usage Profiles

The model provides eight default client usage profiles. These profiles combine two types of user behavior (publishing and collaboration) with the following four levels of usage:

  • Light (Read-only) (10 requests per hour)

  • Light (20 requests per hour)

  • Average (36 requests per hour)

  • Heavy (60 requests per hour)

Default Behavior Defined for SharePoint Users

Behavior type Goals of the users and of the SharePoint site Examples

Publishing

Broadcasting and distributing information, data, and documents to people

E-magazine or e-newspaper site

Collaboration

Generating ideas, tracking progress toward a goal, and sharing and editing documents

Site for a research division within a company or for a project Web site

The WSS application model defines a standard breakdown of tasks (referred to as the transaction mix) for each usage profile.

Default Load Sizes

The WSS application model also defines a standard set of load sizes for Capacity Planner to use in its calculations. These load sizes vary according to behavior type and deployment type. The following two tables present examples of these standard load sizes.

Creating a Custom Usage Profile

To save a set of percentages that reflects your anticipated transaction mix, use one of the default usage profiles as a template. In the Select Usage Profile list, click a usage profile, and then click Copy. Capacity Planner creates a copy of the selected usage profile and places a default name in the Profile Name box. Change this default name to a name of your choice. This usage template and its associated values will persist throughout the active Capacity Planner session.

Profile Characteristics: Detailed Usage Information

Use the tabs in the Profile characteristics, per client box to view detailed information for the default usage profiles and to fine-tune your custom usage profiles.

Use the following options to configure server usage profiles:

Web Front End

Specify a value for the Percentage (%) of Active Concurrent Users setting. This setting has a single value throughout your SharePoint installation; therefore, this value affects all usage-related calculations for your capacity model. This setting indicates what portion of your user base is actively using your SharePoint installation at any one time. Select a value between 5 percent and 10 percent (the default is 10 percent). For example, if you have a total of 100 users and you expect an average of 5 users to be active at any one time, use a setting of 5 percent.
Search Server

Set Indexing to 1 (on) or to 0 (off).
SQL Server

Set Backup to 1 (on) or to 0 (off).Set Restore to 1 (on) or to 0 (off).

If you turn on any of the Search Server or SQL Server settings, your capacity model will include a fixed transaction cost appropriate to that setting.

Use the following options to modify the level of usage (number of requests or operations per hour) and the transaction mix for your client usage profile.

Intranet-Authenticated

If you are modeling an intranet deployment, use the values on the Intranet-Authenticated tab to fine-tune custom usage profiles.
Internet-Anonymous and

Internet-Authenticated

If you are modeling an Internet deployment, use the settings on the Internet-Anonymous and Internet-Authenticated tabs to fine-tune custom usage profiles.

As shown in the following diagram, the usage percentages for the transaction mix must total 100 percent.

If the total is not 100 percent, Capacity Planner generates an error message when it attempts to simulate the behavior of your capacity model.
