To make load calculations, Capacity Planner must know whether users access your SharePoint installation from the Internet for from an intranet. If your installation supports Internet users, the Capacity Planner must know what percentage of the users are anonymous and what percentage are authenticated (intranet users are assumed to be authenticated).

Important
For modeling purposes, your SharePoint farm must be either an Internet deployment or an intranet deployment; a single capacity model cannot support both Internet and intranet users.

To capture this information, the MOSS application model defines three client types:

The following figure shows this graphically.

Each client type has its own set of transaction costs. Capacity Planner adjusts its calculations depending on the client type (or combination of client types) you specify.

Client Types and Client Profiles

You specify client types as part of each topology site's client profiles. Each client profile identifies who is using the site (client type) and how they are using it (usage profile).

When you configure your deployment's SharePoint farm, the available options for client profiles depend on the type of deployment you specify:

  • Internet deployment: You can configure one or two client profiles.

    • Configure the percentage of anonymous users (Internet Anonymous client type) and the percentage of authenticated users (Internet Authenticated client type). The percentages must add up to 100 percent. (If you specify 100 percent for one type and 0 percent for the other type, you will have one client profile instead of two.)

    • For each client type, specify a usage profile.

  • Intranet deployment: You can configure one client profile. Specify a usage profile for the Intranet Authenticated client type.

When you configure a branch office profile for your deployment, the available client types depend in part on the type of deployment you specified for the SharePoint farm itself. For each branch office profile:

  • If you configured your SharePoint farm as an Internet deployment, you can configure client profiles for the branch offices using the Internet Authenticated or Internet Anonymous client types, and you can use different percentage divisions and different usage profiles than for the SharePoint farm itself. You cannot configure a profile using the Intranet Authenticated client type.

  • If you configured your SharePoint farm as an intranet deployment, you must configure client profiles for the branch offices using the Intranet Authenticated client type. You can specify a different usage profile than for the SharePoint farm itself.

Important
It is possible to create additional client profiles later in the modeling process, using the Model Editor. However, any new profiles must follow the restrictions outlined above. For example, you can create new client profiles (with different usage profiles) for a SharePoint intranet deployment, but they must all use the Intranet Authenticated client type.
