Configuring Migration to Configuration Manager 2012

Updated: May 1, 2011

Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2012

When you migrate from Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 to Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012, you must configure an active source hierarchy and source sites that contain data that you want to migrate. Use the following procedures to configure a source hierarchy and additional source sites from the source hierarchy.

After you complete these procedures, you can then create migration jobs and start to migrate data:

Configure a Source Hierarchy for Migration

To configure the active source hierarchy, you must specify a Configuration Manager 2007 hierarchy that contains the data that you want to migrate. This identifies the top-level site of that hierarchy and becomes the first source site of the active source hierarchy. Use the following procedures to configure an active source hierarchy for migration and to configure additional source sites in that hierarchy.

Perform this procedure with a Configuration Manager console that is connected to the central administration site or to any primary site.

To configure a source hierarchy

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, click Administration.

  2. In the Administration workspace, expand Migration, and then click Active Source Hierarchy.

  3. On the Home tab, in the Migration group, click Specify Source Hierarchy.

  4. In the Specify Migration Source dialog box, select New source hierarchy for the active source hierarchy.

  5. Enter the name or IP address of the site server at the top site of the Configuration Manager 2007 hierarchy that you will migrate.

  6. For the source site access accounts, specify accounts that have read permission to the SMS Provider and read and execute permission to the SQL Server database in the top-level site. If you use the Configuration Manager 2012 computer account, ensure this account is a member of the security group Distributed COM Users in the domain where the Configuration Manager 2007 server resides.

  7. Click OK to save the configuration and open the Data Gathering Status dialog box. Data gathering starts automatically.

  8. When data gathering finishes, click Close to close the Data Gathering Status dialog box and complete the configuration.

Configure Additional Source Sites from the Active Source Hierarchy

When you configure an active source hierarchy, the top-level site of that hierarchy is automatically configured as a source site, and data is gathered from it. After the data gathering finishes, you can configure additional sites from the source hierarchy to gather data. When you configure additional source sites, perform this procedure from the top of the source hierarchy to the bottom, and configure a site as a source site before you configure any of its child sites as source sites.

Use the following procedure to configure additional source sites. This scenario might require that you configure the credentials for a new source site and reconfigure the access account and credentials for a previously configured source site.

To configure additional source sites in the active source hierarchy

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, click Administration.

  2. In the Administration workspace, expand Migration, and then click Active Source Hierarchy.

  3. Click the site that you want to configure as a source site.

  4. On the Home tab, in the Source Site group, click Configure Credentials.

  5. In the Source Site Credentials dialog box, for the source site access accounts, specify accounts that have read permission to the SMS Provider and the SQL Server database in the specified site.

  6. Click OK.

  7. When data gathering finishes, click Close to complete the configuration.
