Use the following procedure to add users to or remove them from the Report Operator user role in Operations Manager 2007. You can also create a new Report Operator user role.

Note
Reporting must be installed before you can update the Report Operator user role. For information about how to install Reporting, see How to Deploy Operations Manager 2007 Reporting Using the Setup Wizard.

To add users or groups to the Report Operator user role

  1. Log on to the computer with an account that is a member of the Operations Manager Administrators role for the Operations Manager 2007 management group.

  2. In the Operations console, click Administration.

  3. In the Administration pane, expand Administration, expand Security, and then click User Roles.

  4. In the User Roles pane, right-click the existing Report Operator user role from within the User Role list and click Properties.

  5. In the User Role Properties dialog box, on the General page, click Add.

  6. On the Select User or Groups page, enter the users or groups that you want to assign to the user role. Click OK.

    Important
Users and groups that are added to this user role can access all the reports in the Reporting Data Warehouse, including reports from applications such as Microsoft Exchange Server that use the Reporting data warehouse. Failure to restrict access to the Report Operator user role can result in unintended information disclosure.
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK to close the User Role Properties dialog box.

    Important
Adding a machine account to a user role member allows all services on that computer to have software development kit (SDK) access. It is recommended that you do not add a machine account to any user role.

To create a new Report Operator user role

  1. In the Operations console, click Administration.

  2. In the Administration pane, expand Administration, expand Security, and then right-click User Roles.

  3. Click New User Role and then Report Operator.

  4. In the User Role Properties dialog box, type a name for the new user role. Optionally, provide a description.

Add users to the new role by clicking Add.

  5. On the Select User or Groups page, enter the users or groups that you want to assign to the user role. Click OK.

    Important
Users and groups that are added to this user role can access all the reports in the Reporting Data Warehouse, including reports from applications such as Microsoft Exchange Server, that use the Reporting data warehouse. Failure to restrict access to the Report Operator user role can result in unintended information disclosure.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK to close the User Role Properties dialog box.

  7. Now you need to add the GUID for the new user role to SQL Server Reporting Services. Use the following steps:

    1. In the User Roles view, double-click the new user role.

    2. Click the Identity tab.

    3. Click Copy to copy the GUID for the new user, and then click OK to close the Properties window.

    4. Start the SQL Server Reporting Services Report Manager by navigating to http://localhost/Reports in a Web browser.

    5. Click the Properties tab.

    6. Click New Role Assignment.

    7. Paste the GUID in the Group or user name field.

    8. Select the roles you want to assign to the new Report Operator user role and click OK.
