Create a Computer Group

Microsoft® Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 enables you to group similar computers together in order to monitor and manage them. You can monitor and manage the group rather than each computer individually.

Use computer grouping rules to specify computers for a computer group. You can group computers together based on their domain, computer name, or attributes, such as the operating system version or installed applications. You can also identify computers to always include or exclude from the computer group, regardless of their other characteristics.

Computer groups are dynamic. For example, a computer group of all Microsoft® Windows 2000™ computers includes all computers running Microsoft Windows 2000 when the rule was created, as well as any new computers that have Microsoft Windows 2000 installed. If you remove Microsoft Windows 2000 from a computer, the computer no longer qualifies for group membership because of the computer group criteria. The MOM Management Server scans managed computers to track and implement changes to the computer group.

Note  Note

Computer group rules are created and enforced only in one management group. Computer group rules for one management group do not apply to other management groups.

You create a computer group for your management group using the MOM Administrator console.
