Nesting enables you to create complex search queries by
combining search expressions. To use nested search expressions when
searching Help topics, keep in mind the following guidelines:
- Use parentheses to nest expressions within a search query. The
expressions in parentheses are evaluated before the rest of the
query. For example, the query "software NOT (metering OR database)"
finds topics containing the word "software," without either of the
words "metering" or "database."
- If a query does not contain a nested element, it is evaluated
from left to right. In this case, the query "software NOT metering
OR database" finds topics containing the word "software" without
the word "metering," or topics containing the word "database."
- The complex query "software AND ((metering OR database) NEAR
role)" finds topics that contain the word "software," along with
the words "metering" and "role" that are close together (within
eight words), or that contain the word "software," along with the
words "database" and "role" that are close together.
Note
You can nest expressions only five levels deep.
