Computer discovery rules specify the criteria that are used to add computers to a management group. By default, agents are automatically installed on computers that meet these criteria when computer discovery is run.
After you run the Install/Uninstall Agents Wizard, the rule applied to discovered computers is listed in the Navigation pane, under the Administration/Computers node.
There may be circumstances in your environment where you do not want to install agents on a new computer, but want to discover a computer and put it in unmanaged mode, or use agentless management. You can create a computer discovery rule to achieve this result.
Use the MOM Administrator console to create a computer discovery rule.
To create a computer discovery rule
- In the Navigation pane, expand Administration, and click Computers.
- In the Detail pane, click Computer Discovery Rulesto display the list of discovery rules.
- In the Navigation pane, right-click Computer Discovery Rules, and then click Create Computer Discovery Rule.
- In the Computer Discovery Rule dialog box, specify the criteria for computer discovery and agent installation.
- Click OKto save the rule.
After you create the rule, you can run computer discovery to add computers to the management group.

To run computer discovery
- In the Detail pane, click on the rule or rules that you want to use.
- In the Navigation pane, right-click Computer Discovery Rules, and then click Run Computer Discovery Now.
