Configuring Database Grooming

Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 (MOM) provides the following default database grooming jobs in the database:

OnePoint -Check Free Data Space
Scheduled to run every 30 minutes, starting daily at 12:45 A.M. This job calculates the percentage of free database space and sends the information to MOM as an event.
OnePoint-Check Integrity
Scheduled to run once a week on Saturday at 10:00 P.M. This job validates the integrity of the database. For example, it checks that the index and data pages are correctly linked and that indices are in their proper sort order.
OnePoint-Groom Alerts
Scheduled to run every hour. This job grooms resolved alerts from the database based on the information specified in Global Settings.
OnePoint-Groom Events
Scheduled to run every hour. This job grooms events from the database based on the information specified in Global Settings.
OnePoint-Groom Sampled Numeric Data
Scheduled to run every hour. This job grooms sampled numeric data from the database based on the information specified in Global Settings.
OnePoint-Reindex
Scheduled to run once a week on Sunday at 10:00 P.M. This job rebuilds the table indices to improve performance. The OnePoint-Reindex database job requires approximately 40 percent free space within the database to successfully complete. For example, a 10-GB database needs 14 GB total space in the database to successfully rebuild the indices. If the jobs fail due to lack of disk space, the failure of the jobs will not adversely affect your MOM implementation.
OnePoint-Reindex Event Table
Scheduled to run once a day at 12:00 A.M. This job rebuilds the event table indices to improve performance. The OnePoint-Reindex Event Table database job requires approximately 40% free space within the database to successfully complete. For example, a 10-GB database needs 14 GB total space in the database to successfully rebuild the indices. If the jobs fail due to lack of disk space, the failure of the jobs will not adversely affect your MOM implementation. This job does not run on Sundays, when the OnePoint-Reindex job rebuilds all table indices.
OnePoint-TodayStatisticsUpdateComputersAndAlerts

Modifying Grooming Settings

MOM provides easy access to database grooming default settings in the MOM Administrator Console Configuration snap-in Global Settings. From the Database Grooming tab, you can change the number of records deleted and the retention time for events, alerts, performance data, and logs. You can also set the retention time for automatic resolution of alerts.

MOM provides default grooming jobs in the database. These grooming jobs use the retention times and the number of records to delete specified in Global Settings in the MOM Administrator Console Configuration snap-in.

For example, if you set the retention time for All Sampled Numeric Data to 90 days and to delete 4,000 records, the OnePoint-Groom Sampled Numeric Data grooming job runs every five minutes, checking for data older than 90 days and deleting 4,000 records older than 90 days.

The following table provides the default database grooming settings:

Records to Delete Retention Time Number of Records
All Sampled Numeric Data 90 days 4,000
Auto Resolve Error Alerts Two days All
Auto Resolve Information Alerts Four hours All
Auto Resolve Success Alerts Four hours All
Auto Resolve Warning Alerts One day All
Other Events Seven days 4,000
Resolved Alerts 30 days 4,000
Windows Logs Not Including Security Seven days 4,000
Windows Security Event Log 30 days 4,000

These settings are adequate for most enterprise environments.
