Active Directory Options

The wizard provides the ability to inventory all domains, organizational units (OUs), and containers or to specify which domains, OUs, and containers to inventory.

Find all Computers in all Domains, Containers, and Organizational Units

Use this option to find all computers in all domains, containers, and organizational units in the specified Active Directory forest.

Find Computers in the Specified Domains, Containers, and Organizational Units

Use this option to specify individual domains, containers, or organizational units in the Active Directory forest. This option is recommended in the following scenarios:

·         The organization is extremely large with many domains and organizational units.

·         There are more than 120,000 computers in the forest.

·         The user running the assessment has local Administrator credentials that are valid for computers in a specific domain or container.

·         To reduce the number of computers on which the assessment is completed.

·         Where there are security concerns when assessing servers or client computers in certain containers and organizational units.

Directory View Performance

If the Active Directory forest is extremely large (many domains and objects), it could take up to five minutes for the wizard to query Active Directory and build the directory view. While the directory view is being built, the wizard may appear unresponsive.

Directory View States

The check boxes in the directory view indicate which domains, containers, and organizational units are included in the inventory. The tree view has the following states:

·         Check box is cleared. Indicates that the specific object and none of the child objects will be queried to discover computers.

·         Check box is selected. Indicates that the object and all child objects will be queried to discover computers.

·         Intermediate. If the check box for any child object is cleared, a solid grey box is shown for all parent objects in the hierarchy, and only the parent objects and selected child objects will be queried to discover computers.

Note: If a domain or subdomain is selected, any child domains will be inventoried even though they don’t show up as being selected in the UI. For example, if you choose sub-A.domain.com then sub-1.sub-A.domain.com and sub-2.sub-A.domain.com will also be part of the inventory even though they were not selected in the wizard.
