Inventory Scenarios

The MAP Toolkit lets you collect inventory information from computers running Microsoft® Windows operating systems and software and computers that run other operating systems. On the Inventory Scenarios page of the Inventory and Assessment Wizard, you can specify which operating systems and software you want to include in a particular inventory run in your environment.

Windows computers

Select this option to inventory computers in your environment that are running a Windows operating system. The data collected during this inventory is used to help assess readiness for a variety of migration projects, including Windows 8, Windows 7, Office 2010, Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012. Use this option to collect usage data for Microsoft® core server products that are not explicitly listed as an option. For a list of server products that can be tracked, see Appendix A, “Supported Server Products,” of the Getting Started Guide.

After you select this option, you will need to specify the appropriate credentials to access these computers.

Linux/UNIX computers

This scenario will only be enabled if the machine on which MAP is installed is running Windows XP (64 bit only), Windows Vista, or later.

Select this option to inventory Linux and HP-UX based computers in your environment. The MAP Toolkit uses the SSH protocol and the default SSH port (Port 22) to inventory these computers. The tool also allows you to change the default port, if required.

After you select this option, you will need to specify the appropriate credentials to access these computers. The account you specified must be able to connect to the servers using SSH.

VMware computers

Select this option to use the VMware Web services interface or vCenter to collect guest and host information about computers in your environment running VMware ESX, VMware ESXi, and VMware Server. The data collected during this inventory is useful for planning migration to Microsoft® operating systems.

After you select this option, you will need to provide credentials to an account in VMware server that has permission to connect to and enumerate virtual machines.

Active Devices and Users

Select this option to collect information about devices and users in your environment that are running Windows operating systems and that are active on the network. The MAP Toolkit uses Active Directory and WMI to collect the data and the User Interface enforces usage of Active Directory as a discovery method.

After you select this inventory option, you will need to specify the appropriate credentials for Active Directory and WMI.

Exchange Server

Select this option to collect information about the number of servers running Microsoft® Exchange Server in your environment and the extent of server and client usage.

After you select this inventory option, you will need to provide an account that has administrative access to the server running Exchange Server.

Forefront® Endpoint Protection Server

This scenario will only be enabled if the machine on which MAP is installed also has PowerShell 2.0 or newer installed.

Select this option to collect information about the number of servers and clients running and using Microsoft® Forefront Endpoint Protection.

After you select this option, you will need to specify the appropriate credentials for the SCCM servers running Forefront Endpoint Protection server components. Specifically you will need to provide an account that can run remote PowerShell sessions on the SCCM server(s) as well as access the SCCM backend database from those sessions.

Lync Server

This scenario uses remote PowerShell, SQL and WMI to collect information about computers that are running Lync software.  This information helps determine the extent of server and client use of Lync Server in your environment.

After you select his option, you will need to specific the appropriate credentials for the Lync servers in your environment.  Specifically, you will need to provide accounts that can run remote PowerShell, SQL Server and WMI sessions on the Lync servers.

SQL Server®

Select this option to quickly collect information about computers in your environment running Microsoft® SQL Server®. This option will gather data is relevant only to the SQL Server inventory.  After you select this option, you will need to specify the appropriate credentials to access these computers.

This option uses WMI as a collection technology.

SQL Server with Database Details

Select this option to collect very detailed information about computers in your environment running Microsoft SQL Server.  This information is useful for planning migration to newer versions of SQL Server® and determining the extent of server and client usage of SQL Server® in your environment.

This option will take longer to run than the SQL Server option and uses SQL Native, SQL Windows and WMI collection technologies.

Windows Azure Platform Migration

Select this option to inventory web applications and SQL Server® databases in your environment and assess them for migration to Windows Azure Platform.

MySQL, Oracle and Sybase

Select this option to inventory computers running MySQL, Oracle and Sybase databases. This option can be used to assess your environment for migrating to Microsoft® SQL Server®.

The Oracle client must be installed on the MAP machine to collect the schema information. If the client is not installed, MAP will only be able to collect instance information.
