When a Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site server is upgraded to Configuration Manager 2007, Setup detects whether there is an older version of the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates, upgrade the tool, and initiate synchronization. You can also manually run the Configuration Manager 2007 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates installation on a site server by running the installation from the Configuration Manager 2007 DVD. The following procedure provide details for each installation method.

To manually install the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates from the Configuration Manager 2007 DVD
  1. Browse to \<DVD root>\SMSSETUP\SUMSCANTOOLS\I386.

  2. Run SMSITMU.msi, and complete the Setup wizard.

If you have already installed the Configuration Manager 2007 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates, Setup will try to repair it. If you have a previous version of this inventory tool, Setup will try to upgrade the previous version.

The topics in this section provide more details about options provided by the Setup wizard.

Important
If you are reinstalling the Configuration Manager 2007 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates, use the same package names. Before the client installs any software update, it runs the inventory tool first. If the name of the inventory tool package has changed, packages previously created by the Deploy Software Updates Wizard will use the obsolete inventory tool package, causing incorrect results.
