If you complete the Setup wizard with all of the default settings, you will have the following SMS objects:
- Four packages. One package is for the inventory tool (called
Microsoft Updates Tool), and the other 3 packages are for the
Windows Update Agent (called Windows Update Agent IA64, Windows
Update Agent x64, and Windows Update Agent x86).
- Ten programs. Seven programs are in the inventory tool package.
The Microsoft Updates Tool Sync program is run only by the
synchronization host to get the latest Windows Update Catalog. The
other 6 programs (Microsoft Updates Tool, Microsoft Updates Tool
(expedited), Microsoft Updates Tool IA64, Microsoft Updates Tool
IA64 (expedited), Microsoft Updates Tool x64, and Microsoft Updates
Tool x64 (expedited)) in the inventory tool package run the
inventory tool on the client. The expedited program causes a
hardware inventory cycle to occur immediately after running the
inventory tool, which can cause additional processor utilization on
the client and additional network traffic, so it is not used by
default. The last 3 programs (Windows Update Agent IA64, Windows
Update Agent x64, and Windows Update Agent x86) are in the
associated Windows Update Agent packages that installs the Windows
Update Agent on the clients as a dependent program before running
the inventory tool.
- Five collections. The Microsoft Updates Tool Sync collection
contains only the synchronization host. The Microsoft Updates Tool
(preproduction) collection contains only the test computer
specified during Setup. The Microsoft Updates Tool collection
contains the membership of the pre-production collection (the
designated test computer). When you remove the collection limiting
option, the collection will then contain all SMS clients that can
run the inventory tool. The Microsoft Updates Tool IA64 collection
contains all clients that have the "Itanium" in the operating
system name and the Microsoft Tool x64 collection contains all
clients that have "x64" in the operating system name.
- Two advertisements. The Microsoft Updates Tool Sync
advertisement sends the synchronization program to the
synchronization collection, and the Microsoft Updates Tool
advertisement sends the non-expedited version of the inventory tool
to the non-pre-production collection. There is no advertisement for
the Windows Update Agent program because this runs before running
the inventory tool program as a dependent program.
Note To distribute the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates to x64 and IA64 clients, you must manually create an advertisement, similar to the Microsoft Updates Tool advertisement, for each operating system type. Select the associated package, program, and collection when creating the new advertisement.
For the easiest administrative experience, allow Setup to create the synchronization host and all of the default objects. After you verify that the test computer runs the tool correctly, remove the collection limiting as described later in this document and then run the Deploy Software Updates Wizard to deploy software updates. If you chose to customize your environment, before you run the Deploy Software Updates Wizard, you should have a synchronization host in the synchronization collection and you should distribute the inventory tool to clients that have the Windows Update Agent installed.
