This section describes how to install and configure Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0.
Tasks
- Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1
- Configure Windows SharePoint Services
Prerequisites
Before you begin, you must download Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Service Pack 1. See Windows SharePoint Services for more information.
Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1
To deploy Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0 in a server farm environment, you must install and configure Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0 on a front-end server before you configure Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0 services or create sites. You must also have Microsoft SQL Server running on the back-end server before you install Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0 on your front-end server.
In this procedure you do an advanced installation of Windows SharePoint Services on your front-end server, COLLAB01.
Procedure W03-DWSH.9: To install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1 on COLLAB01
-
On COLLAB01, run SharePoint.exe.
-
Follow the prompts to perform an advanced installation, and set the server type to Web Front End.
-
When the installation completes, ensure the Run the SharePoint Wizard now check box is selected.
Configure Windows SharePoint Services
After Setup finishes, you can use the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard to configure Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0. The SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard automates several configuration tasks, including:
- Installing and configuring the configuration database.
- Installing and enabling Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0
services.
- Installing the SharePoint Central Administration Web
application.
Use the following instructions to run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.
Configure Windows SharePoint Services
Procedure W03-DWSH.10: To Configure Windows SharePoint Services
-
Follow the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard to create a new server farm.
-
Set COLLABBE01 as the database server. Enter FABRIKAM\SharePoint_AppID credentials for database access account.
-
Specify 8080 as the port number for SharePoint central administration Web application. Select HTLM for security settings.
Note: You must configure the Administrative Virtual Server to use NTLM authentication if you are going to use Microsoft Provisioning System (MPS) to provision Windows SharePoint Services sites. -
Complete the installation. The SharePoint Central Administration Web page will open automatically. If you are prompted for credentials, enter the FABRIKAM\Administrator credentials.
Prevent Event ID Error Messages
You can safely ignore the event ID 10016 or 10017 DCOM error messages that are logged in the System log. If you want to prevent the event ID error messages from being logged in the System log, use the Component Services snap-in to enable the Local Activation permission to the Internet Information Services (IIS) Wamreg Admin Service for the domain user account that you specified as the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 service account (Fabrikam\Sharepoint_AppID).
For more information, see KB article 920783: Event ID 10017 error messages are logged in the System log after you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
Configure Windows SharePoint Services Search Service
After you have installed and configured Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0 on your front-end server, you must start the Windows SharePoint Services Search service on your front-end server.
Configure and Start the Windows SharePoint Services Search Service
Procedure W03-DWSH.11: To configure and start the Windows SharePoint Services Search Service
-
On the SharePoint Central Administration home page, on the Operations tab, navigate to the COLLAB01 server in farm.

-
Keep other default settings and start the Windows SharePoint Services Search service.
Create a New Web Application on COLLAB01
After you install and configure Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0, and configure services in your server farm, you can create a Web application and a site collection. In this procedure you will create the Web application on COLLAB01.
Procedure W03-DWSH.12: To create a new Web application by using SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration
-
From the SharePoint Central Administration home page, on the Application Management tab, select Create or extend Web application.
-
Follow the on-screen instructions to create a new Web application with the following information:
- Create a new IIS Web site with the default description and port
setting.
- Authentication provider: NTLM
- Create a new application pool with
FABRIKAM\SharePoint_AppID credentials
- Create a new IIS Web site with the default description and port
setting.
-
After creating the new Web application, open a command prompt on COLLAB01 and issue an iisreset command.
Move COLLAB01 into the Shared Windows SharePoint Services Servers OU
Procedure W03-DWSH.13: To move COLLAB01 into the Shared Windows SharePoint Services Servers OU
-
On AD01, open Active Directory Users and Computers and expand your domain (fabrikam.com).
