Note for Edge Server (EXEDGE01) Upgrade
Exchange 2007 Edge Transport server role was designed specifically to deploy into a perimeter network. As such, the reference architecture in Hosted Messaging and Collaboration version 4.0 included an Edge Transport Server. However, there is lag time for both newly created and updated accepted domains and accepted users on the Edge server because of built in EdgeSync delay replication and cache delay (see KB Article 936159). This can cause unwanted NDR messages for hosting organizations.
For this reason, we offer an alternative deployment scenario in green field deployment guidance for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration version 4.5, where the Microsoft Exchange 2007 SP1 Hub Transport server can be reached directly through the Internet.
If you have included Edge Transport Server in you Hosted Messaging and Collaboration version 4.0 deployment, and the Edge Transport Server is meeting their anti-virus and anti-spam need, it is not necessary to remove the Edge Server deployment. Simply upgrade the server software to Exchange 2007 SP1.
