Hosted Messaging and Collaboration version 4.5 introduced a new feature called Web-based distribution, which allowed Outlook 2007 client to download their Offline Address Book (OAB) via a Web distribution point published on an Exchange 2007 Client Access Server (CAS). The new distribution mechanism improves client download performance, reduces bandwidth usage, and improves operational efficiency with greater scalability.

Tasks

  1. Deploy the OAB Web Distribution Server (EXCASOAB01)
  2. Migrate to Web-Based OAB Distribution
  3. Upgrade the Hosted E-mail Offline Address Book Update Batch Application

Deploy the OAB Web Distribution Server (EXCASOAB01)

To take advantage of the enhanced functionality of Web-based distribution, an Offline Address Book (OAB) Web Distribution server is added to the reference architecture of Hosted Messaging and Collaboration version 4.5.

To deploy OAB Web Distribution Servers, see the following topics in the Deployment Walkthrough:

Migrate to Web-Based OAB Distribution

Offline Address Book (OAB) can be downloaded via two distribution mechanism. In Hosted Messaging and Collaboration version 4.0, the OAB is downloaded from a public folder server via Public Folder based distribution. In Hosted Messaging and Collaboration version 4.5, Outlook 2007 client can instead download the OAB from a web distribution point on a Client Access Server. An organization plan subscribed by a tenant determines what distribution mechanism the OAB will be provisioned for download.

To migrate to Web-based OAB distribution, all users within a tenant must have Outlook 2007 clients.

Procedure UG.21: To migrate a tenant to Web-based OAB distribution

  1. Use the Hosted Email 2007::CreateOrganizationPlan procedure to set the <outlookClient> element to Outlook2007.

  2. Use the Hosted Email 2007::ChangeOrganizationPlanAssignment procedure to change the organization plan to the new organization plan created in step 1. The organization’s OAB will be moved from public folder based distribution to Web-based distribution.

Note:
For more information about the Hosted Email 2007 namespace, review and download the Microsoft Provisioning System SDK.
Note:
Each tenant can be migrated independently. As the tenant migrates, the resource allocation on Public Folder OAB server is gradually reduced. When all tenants allocated to a public folder OAB server has migrated to Web-based distribution, the public folder OAB server can then be safely removed from the deployment.

Upgrade the Hosted E-mail Offline Address Book Update Batch Application

Procedure UG.22: To upgrade the Hosted E-mail OAB Update batch application

  1. On MPS01, uninstall the Hosted E-mail OAB Update batch application v4.0.460.0.

  2. Follow the instructions on Install the Hosted E-mail Offline Address Book (OAB) Update Batch Application in the Deployment Walkthrough to install the new version and validate the configuration.
