The Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager monitors the Windows Application log on computers running Exchange 2010 and generates this alert when the events specified in the following Details table are logged.

The Microsoft Exchange POP3 service (MSExchangePOP3) isn't running.

Explanation

This Error event indicates that the Microsoft Exchange POP3 service (MSExchangePOP3) is not running.

User Action

You can perform the following procedures by using the sever that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 that has the Client Access Server (CAS) server role installed. To do this, you must log on by using a domain account that has the permissions that are assigned to the Local Service Account. The account must also be a member of the local Administrators group on that computer.

Use Microsoft Management Console to start and stop the POP3 service
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  2. To start the Microsoft Exchange POP3 service, right-click Microsoft Exchange POP3 in the results pane, and then click Start.

  3. To stop the Microsoft Exchange POP3 service, right-click Microsoft Exchange POP3 in the results pane, and then click Stop.

Use net start to start and stop the POP3 service
  1. On the Exchange server that has the CAS server role installed, open a Command Prompt window.

Verify that the POP3 service is running
  1. On the Exchange server that has the CAS server role installed, open a Command Prompt window.

  2. At the command prompt, type telnet localhost 110, and then press ENTER.Note POP3 is working correctly if Telnet returns a "+OK Microsoft Exchange 2007 POP3 server ready" message.

  3. Close Telnet, and then close the Command Prompt window.
