Before you can start protecting data, you must install a protection agent on each computer that contains data that you want to protect. After the protection agent is installed on the computer, the computer is referred to as a protected computer in the Management task area. However, the data sources on the computer are not protected until you add them to a protection group.

To install a protection agent

  1. On the DPM server, in DPM Administrator Console, click Management on the navigation bar, and then click the Agents tab.

  2. On the Actions pane, click Install. The Protection Agent Installation Wizard appears and displays a list of available computers.

  3. On the Select Computers page, select the computer you want to protect and then click Add. The computers appear in the Selected computers pane.

  4. Click Next.

  5. On the Enter Credentials page, enter your credentials and then click Next.

  6. On the Choose Restart Method page, select the method you will use to restart the computers after the protection agent is installed.

    Note
Workstations do not require a restart when you install the protection agent. Servers must be restarted before you can start protecting data. This restart is necessary to ensure that the protection agent is installed correctly. If you choose to manually restart the server, you might need to click Refresh information in the Actions pane to refresh agent information after the install.
  7. If any of the computers you selected in step 6 are clustered servers, an additional Choose Restart Method page appears, which allows you to select the method you will use to restart the clustered servers.

    Important
You must install the protection agent on all nodes of the server cluster to successfully protect the clustered data. The servers must be restarted before you can start protecting data. This restart is necessary to ensure that the protection agent is installed correctly. Because of the time required to start services, it might take a few minutes after a restart is complete before DPM can contact the server.
    Note
DPM will not restart a server that belongs to a Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS). You must manually restart a server in an MSCS cluster.
  8. On the Summary page, on the Tasks tab, verify that the Install protection agent on < computer name> task appears, and then click Install to proceed with the installation. The results appear on the Task tab to indicate whether the installation is successful.

  9. On the Installing page, click Close.
