When you install the Windows® Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK), an option is available to install the Windows Assessment Toolkit and the Windows® Performance Toolkit. By default, when the Windows Assessment Toolkit is selected, the Windows® Assessment Console and assessments are installed. The Windows Performance Toolkit should also be installed to help you analyze assessment results. For lab environments that include a server, a group of test computers, and an administrator’s computer, advanced assessment services are available in the Windows® Assessment Services - Client (Windows ASC). For more information about advanced assessment services, see Windows Assessment Services Technical Reference.

Install the Windows Assessment Toolkit

For complete instructions that describe how to install the Windows Assessment Toolkit or any other feature of the Windows ADK, see Installing the Windows ADK.

Important
When you select features to install, select the Windows Assessment Toolkit and the Windows Performance Toolkit.

Set the Symbols Environment Variable

Some assessments require access to symbols. If the symbols are not available, the assessment results can have incorrect or missing information. In many cases, a connection to the Internet and access to the Microsoft public symbols server resolves this problem. If a connection to the Internet is not available, you can set up a network path to the symbols or install the symbols on the local computer. For more information, see Common In-Depth Analysis Issues.

To set the symbols environment variable

  1. Open Computer Properties. To do this, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

  2. In the Properties window, click Advanced System Settings.

  3. In the System Properties window, on the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.

  4. Under System variables, click New to set the symbols environment variable by using one of the following paths:

    • Use the public symbols server (requires internet connection)

Connect the computer to the Internet so that the computer can access the Microsoft symbols server. Then, configure the _NT_SYMBOL_PATH environment variable to use the Microsoft symbols server at http://msdl.microsoft.com/downloads/symbols.

    • Use a network connected symbols path (requires local network connection)

Connect the computer to the local intranet, and then configure the _NT_SYMBOL_PATH environment variable to use an intranet symbols path.

    • Use a local symbols path

Download the symbols to the local computer, and then point the computer to this location. To do this, set the _NT_SYMBOL_PATH environment variable to use a local symbols path, such as C:\Symbols.
